Manic Depression - Bipolar Depressionposted on 22 November 2007 | posted in In Depth ArticlesWe would consider using all natural remedies applicable to regular, monoplar depression. In addition: Candida is often aetiologically important. Increasing brain choline (and presumably therefore the neurotransmitters acetycholine) levels by supplementing phosphatidyl choline brings good results in manic depression. In candidiasis, acetaldehyde from Candida suppresses acetylcholine synthesis by binding Acetyl CoA. Acetaldehyde binds to serotonin and leads to depression, so a candida toxin regime is beneficial. Find out more about Candida Albicans L-acetyl carnitine is similiar structurally to acetyl choline and mimics acetyl choline's beneficial effects on memory, as well as stabilizing brain cell membranes; acting as a pwerful antioxidant within brain cells; and improving the production of energy within brain cells. 1 gram of Vitamin C 3 times daily has been shown to result in significant clinical improvement. (This is because it lowers vanadium, high levels of which are linked to mania). Tryptophan or 5-hydroxy tryptophan and St John's Wort has been shown to be helpful. Diseases often associated with low levels of tryptophan (melatonins amino acid precursor), such as anorexia, manic depression, some forms of schizophrenia, and pellagra are also associated with low melatonin levels, so melotonin may be therapeutic in some of these conditions. Low levels of melatonin and inefficient serotonin may be related to poor methylation, so giving the homocysteine factorsB12, folate and B6may help build levels of SAM. The supplement to use that contains these factors is Homocysteine Redux Manic depressives have disturbed circadin rythums. Light therapy as fpr SAD may help. Vitamin B12 in the form of methylcobalamin at a dosage of 1.5 - 3mg daily upon awakening has been found to decrease daytime melatonin while increasing nightime levels. This improves sleep quality, reducing restlessness and frequent awakenings, while increasing daytime alterness and concentration, and improving mood. Perhaps this approach can help. E vitamin 400ius 400-800ius daily can also be helpful. Share this blog entry:
