There are many causes of tinnitus with the main ones perhaps being atherosclerosis and consequent ischaemia (insufficient blood supply), and degenerative changes to the hair cells in the cochlea. When ischaemia is the cause, the main remedies are considered to be hawthorn, mistletoe and the vasodilators black cohosh and ginkgo biloba. Where there is sensory hearing impairment and degenerative changes in the cochlea, scullcap and passiflora are recommended. These herbs are combined in Ginko Formula (TIN110).

Sometimes the tinnitus is due to a middle ear infection and may quickly respond to Bactocurb. Christopher Hobbs writings refer to the cure of tinnitus by cordyceps, but only when there was a fluid level in the middle ear, I.E. otitis media.
