Ginger has been used for thousands of years to treat numerous conditions. In modern herbalism it is used principally for poor circulation, sluggish digestion, inflammation, and nausea and vomiting:

It can be used as a stimulant of the peripheral circulation for conditions such as feeling cold, cramps, chillblains and slow healing.

It promotes gastric and biliary secretion, and can be used to support a sluggish digestive system, being particularly recommended for excess gas.

It inhibts prostaglandins and thromboxanes, and is also anti-oxidant, thus providing anti-inflammatory effects.

It lowers cholesterol levels largely through its choleretic effect.

In motion (travel) sickness it reduces dizziness, nausea, vomiting and cold sweating (one study found it superior to the drug dramamine)

In pregnancy associated nausea and vomiting it brings about a significant reduction in the severity of the nausea and the number of vomiting attacks.

The nausea and vomiting that can be induced by chemotherapy can also be helped by ginger.

Like onion, garlic, and cayenne, ginger causes fibrin breakdown and therefore may combat the lumpy skin that tends to develop around varicose veins. (lipodermatosclerosis)

Herbs that are anti-platelet such as ginger (and garlic, gingko, and feverfew) should probably not be taken by people taking heparin, warfarin, aspirin, and the other anti-clotting/anti-platelet drugs, and also should not be taken before surgery.
