Eyes - Macular Degenerationposted on 18 November 2007 | posted in What remedies might help my problem?Age related macular degeneration is a very common cause of poor vision in later life. The macular is the part of the retina that is the 'seeing' part. Damage to this can cause the loss of central vision, leaving only peripheral vision. Research evidence suggests that individuals who have been taking antioxidants in addition to their normal diet have a much lesser incidence of macular degeneration. Macular degeneration is the slow deterioration of the cells in the macula, a tiny area near the centre of the retina where vision is most acute. Every adult appears to suffer from the condition to some degree, with deterioration acclerating after the age of 50. Free radicals are heavily implicated as the cause of the condition. Researchers believe that the anthocyanidins in bilberry can help prevent or even cure macular degeneration. These bioflavonoids scavenge free radicals and additionally strengthen collagen structures within the eye, including blood vessels, improving ocular circulation and oxygenation. Grape Seed Formula contains these anthocyanidins and additionally contains high levels of anthocyanidins from grape seed. Ginkgo biloba has been shown to increase visual acuity in people suffering from macular degeneration: as well as providing antioxidant bioflavonoids it increases blood circulation to the eyes, thus speeding healing of all the tissues associated with vision. Eyebright is present as a general eye tonifier, and the liver herbs milk thistle and dandelion are present because of evidence linking liver health to eye health. Nutritional support for macular degeneration would include zinc, vitamin c, found in Antioxidant Supreme and the carotenoids lutein, zeaxanthin and lycopene which can be found in Carotenoid Blend. A healthy liver can really contribute to macular degeneration prevention. To find out more how to support your liver read this article Share this blog entry:
