Vitamin E is normally extracted from soya oil. Much of the soya crop is now genetically modified in order to render the plant resitant to weedkiller, and such crops, which now represent more some 70% of the harvest in North America, are being used to source Vitamin E. It is claimed that the genetically-modified (GM) protein is excluded in the extraction process, but the possibility that this is technically achievable is remote. Some Vitamin E is still sourced from Non-GM soya, but contamination with GM beans seems certain. Manufacturers who source their Vitamin E from soya are therefore unable to guarantee freedom from GM protein.
