Dandelion root is one of the most revered and widely applicable gentle tonics for liver function. It is both a choloretic i.e. it stimulates the liver to manufacture bile and then encourages the newly formed bile to flow to the gall-bladder, and a chologogue, i.e. it stimulates the gall-bladder to empty into the intestine. In this way it detoxifies and decongests the liver, and aids in the digestion of fats. These actions can bring health benefits beyond the localized treatment of liver congestion, portal congestion, hepatitis, and bile duct inflammation; indeed dandelion has been used to treat boils, eczema and other skin problems, eye problems, breast problems, muscular rheumatism, heart burn, hypoglycaemia, hypercholesterolaemia, anorexia, digestive disorders, diarrhoea, appendicitis, and fluid retention (though for this latter indication dandelion leaf would be better). The botanical name for dandelion, Taraxacum, relates to this wide variety of benefits, for taraxos means 'disorder' and akos means 'remedy'.

Dandelion is one of the more nutritive herbs, and in fact has higher levels of vitamins and minerals than many culinary vegetables. It is also rich in the soluble fibres inulin and pectin. In fact of some 35,000 plants known to contain inulin, dandelion root (along with burdock root and chicory root) is one of the richest in this substance. Soluble fibres decrease constipation, lower blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels and help normalize blood sugar levels. Additionally, inulin acts as a food substrate for bifidobacteria (i.e. it is a prebiotic), and has been shown to render bifidobacteria the predominant colonic bacterium while stagnating or decreasing numbers of Bacteroides, fusobacteria, clostridia and coliforms. Bifidobacteria digest inulin to produce the benficial short-chain fatty acids such as acetic, propionic, and butyric acids. (Butyric acid has protective effects against colorectal cancer)
