Can Natural Remedies Help Prevent Cataracts/posted on 22 November 2007 | posted in In Depth ArticlesTransparency of the lens decreases with age: most people over the age of 60 years display some degree of lens opacity. There is evidence that progression of early cataracts can be arrested and even reversed by nutritional measures in about 90% of cataract sufferers. Age-related (senile) cataracts are due to free-radical damage of the protein in the lens, so the prime nutiritonal intervention should be to decrease exposure to oxidising agents such as excess dietary fat, radiation from leaky microwave ovens, and sunlight. Additionally antioxidant supplements should be taken, especially carotene, vitamin C, vitamin E, selenium and cysteine or glutathione. All of these ingredients can be found in Antioxidant Supreme, which is a convenient way of taking these nutrients. Some herbal combinations are known to increase the glutathione levels of the lens and have been shown to at least partially reverse cataract formation in 60% of those with early cataracts. Such combinations typically include rehmannia and poria and these are combined in Lycium&Formula with anthocyanidins from bilberry, grapeseed and cranberry, and the prime antioxidant green food, barleygrass. Rehmannia is a circulatory stimulant and poria possesses reletively strong hydroxyl radical scavenging propertis. Lycium Formula also contains extract of lycium fruit, which is a traditional eye remedy rich in antioxidants, especially a highly biologically active form of betacarotene and zeaxanthin (in fact lycium is the richest source of carotenoids known). Consumption of lycium raises serum levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and lowers lipid peroxides. Other alternatives for helping cataracts that could be considered is the herbal formula FRAD67and AntioxidantSupreme and Omega 3 EPA (Feel free to use this article online and in your email newsletters as long as you leave it intact and do not alter it in anyway.
