Aniseed Plus (v) (60)

Intestinal trematodes (a class of flatworm known as flukes, unlike intestinal nematodes (roundworms) and intestinal protozoa (unicellular organisms), do not appear to be common in the West. They are endemic in the Far East and Southeast Asia and in some parts of North Africa (Egypt). The commonest intestinal fluke to infect man is Fasciolopsis Buski, Echinostoma, Heterophyes, and Metagonimus are less frequent causes of human infection. These flukes inhabit the small intestine, where they can cause inflammation and even ulceration. Mild infections are asymptomaic, but heavy infections can cause diarrhoea, flatulence, dyspepsia and colic. Systemic effects can be caused by the absorption of fluke toxins. Occasionally the flukes or their eggs may embolize to other parts of the body, notably the brain and heart. Infection is by eating raw or undercooked fish, and contaminated vegetables, especially fresh water plants such as the water chestnut. The liver fluke, Fasciola Hepatica, can be acquired through eating watercress.

Stool examinations to visualize the eggs or adult flukes is the diagnostic method of choice. Other labratory findings may include anaemia and eosinophilia.

In light infection, spontaneous resolution may occur within a year. Orthodox treatment is with synthetic antihelmintics. Traditionally the herbs used to combat flukes are wormwood, wormseed, butternut and cayenne. Trematocurb has been developed kinesiologically and contains a whole array of antiparasitic herbs including wormwood, artemisia annua, garlic, black walnut, butternut bark, hyssop, aniseed, celery seed, peppermint, fennel and cinnamon.
